ATLANTIC EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL (AEI) STUDY ABROAD 

PROGRAM APPLICATION 2024-2025

APPLICATION DEADLINE - November 3, 2023

Again this year, the AEI Study Abroad Program will offer a limited number of full scholarships to eligible New Brunswick high school students in the Anglophone sector to spend the 2024-2025 school year in GERMANY or SWITZERLAND.  This program is being offered in collaboration with Youth for Understanding (YFU).  Please visit their website www.yfu.org for more information.

The scholarship will include:

  • return international airfare to Germany or Switzerland and transportation to the host community
  • all tuition costs with the host school
  • language training that may be offered in the host country 
  • accommodations and meals with a host family
  • a modest monthly spending allowance (although participants may want to bring additional funds)
  • medical insurance
  • costs associated with securing a visa (if required)
  • orientation sessions prior to departure, and debrief sessions upon return to New Brunswick

To be eligible, a student must:

  • be entering Grade 10, 11 or 12 in the 2024-25 school year
  • be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old 
    • to be eligible for the Germany program, students must have been born between March 31, 2006 and July 31, 2009
    • to be eligible for the Switzerland program, students must have been born between September 30, 2006 and May 30, 2009
  • have an 80% average (or equivalent) on their June 2023 high school report, or similar achievement on their Grade 8 report for June 2023
  • complete this application in full, signed by the student, as well as a parent or legal guardian
  • include with this application a personal essay (500 to 1000 words) explaining why they would like to participate and would be a good candidate for this program
  • provide two (2) references who may be contacted directly by the selection committee

Applications are due by midnight, November 3, 2023

Upon acceptance, participants will be provided with the rules and code of behavior relevant to this program, and signatures of both the student and their parent or legal guardian will be required.

PLEASE NOTE:   While each student's academic record is unique, participation in this program may result in a student spending an extra year in high school in New Brunswick before graduating. While full participation in high school courses in Germany or Switzerland is essential to this program, it should also be seen as a unique opportunity for personal growth and maturity as global citizens.

ESSAY

  • Attach a personal essay (500-1000 words) in which you explain why you would like to participate in this program and why you feel you would be a good candidate. 
  • Your essay should speak to your interests, goals, and what you hope to accomplish during and after your exchange year.
  • Your essay should also speak to how you might approach the challenges you will face in a country with a different culture and language of your own.
  • Your essay should be typed and single spaced.

REFERENCES

Please provide contact information for two (2) adult references who know you well.  One must be from a principal, vice-principal, guidance counselor, or teacher.   The second must be from an adult outside of your family who knows you well (i.e. employer, mentor, coach, family friend, etc.)  NOTE: References may be contacted directly by the selection committee.
